Software

Depending on the software, there may be several ways for you as a student to access it.

Software on LTH's student computers

You can use LTH's student computers in LTH's computer rooms, and you can also connect to and use these student computers remotely. On LTH's student computers, most software used in various courses is pre-installed and ready to use.

Software on your computer via AppsAnywhere

You can use AppsAnywhere, which is Lund University's web portal for software. The software can then be used both on the computer room computers and your own private computer. Unfortunately, AppsAnywhere only works with Windows (not Mac), and only some software is available through AppsAnywhere. Log in to AppsAnywhere to see what software is available. You can read more about AppsAnywhere and how to log in below.

Software locally installed on your own private computer

You can also in some cases install the software locally on your own private computer (in the old usual way). You can read more about this under the respective software below. Please note that we are not normally able to provide support for installations on your own private computer. If you have problems, we recommend the use methods above.

Requests for software

Normally we only install software at the request of teachers or course coordinators. They will find information about this on the page about software installations for teachers.

As a student, you are therefore recommended to contact your teacher with any requests for software.

Lunds University's software webportal

AppsAnywhere is a web portal that provides computer software to students at Lund University. At present, this system works only for Windows computers.

If you're sitting in a computer room on campus

  1. Go to the following web address: apps.lu.se
  2. Log in with "student-ID@lu.se" or "LUCAT-ID@lu.se" and the student account / Lucat password. Example: ab1234cd-s@lu.se if you are a student.
  3. You will now enter a portal where you can start or install the available software.

If you are sitting at a pc.lu.se computer

  1. Launch "Software center", locate and install "AppsAnywhere client"
  2. Go to the following web address: apps.lu.se
  3. Log in with "student-ID@lu.se" or "LUCAT-ID@lu.se" and the student account / Lucat password. Example: ab1234cd-s@lu.se if you are a student.
  4. You will now enter a portal where you can start or install the available software.

If you are sitting at your own computer (Windows)

  1. Go to the following web address: apps.lu.se
  2. Log in with "student-ID@lu.se" or "LUCAT-ID@lu.se" and the student account / Lucat password. Example: ab1234cd-s@lu.se if you are a student.
  3. The first time you use AppsAnywhere on a computer, you need to install software (Cloudpaging player). You will be asked about this when you log in.
  4. You will then enter a portal where you can start or install the available software.

Other software

Free version for students: Abaqus (3D Experience's website)

Adobe soft ware can be found on some lab computers here at LTH. There are no licenses for use on your own computer. The only exception is for a number of students studying Design. See more below.

  • First start "Adobe Creative Cloud"
  • When you start the software you will have to log in with your own private email adress. The first time you might have to create an Adobe ID.
  • Please remember the password...
  • Occasionally "Adobe Creative Cloud" updates itself when you log in. This can take quite a while, 5-10 minutes... The process is not very transparent. So, if you fail to log in, wait 10 minutes and then try again.

How to create an account (Adobe's web page)

Adobe on your own computer. Only for Design students.

  • Students that are course registered the present semester at Industrial Design get a license for Adobe software that can be used on your personal computer.
  • Please notice that to be accepted is not enough. You will have to register for a course. Search here for instructions: Info in english.
  • It can take up to 24 hours after course registration before your Adobe Id is activated.
  • Log in with "YouOwnStudentID@lu.se"  It should look something like this: ab1234cd-s@lu.se
  • At the start of each new semester, your ID might be deactivated. Then make sure to register for this semesters courses. Wait up to 48 hours. Your ID should now be active again.

Free for LU students. The programs are good replacements for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Windows: Find and start these applications with AppsAnywhere.

Mac: Download software and license from Programförmedlingen: Installation of Affinity software

Windows

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 are installed with free antivirus. If you are still using windows 7 or 8, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to Windows 10.

On Intel-based Macs, you can install Windows and run it using a free software called BootCamp. As a LU student, you can download a free copy of Windows, see higher up in this list.

Bootcamp cannot be used on the new ARM-based Macs. (M1 processor). You can buy virtualization software (approx. SEK 1,000) that makes it possible to run Windows on M1-M2 Macs as well. Please notice that you then have to install "Windows for ARM". Check if the software you want to use runs on that Windows version.

Regardless of which Mac you plan to run Windows on, you should be aware that in that case it is best to have a highly specified machine. 16 GB internal memory and at least 256 Gig internal disk are recommended.
