Remote access and VPN

Work from home on LTH's student computers

Linux

Open the terminal and run "ssh username@login.student.lth.se".
The ssh command is a standard command in the terminal also in Windows terminal (cmd). You have to connect with VPN for this to work, se below.

Windows remote access

Update 2024-12-11: During the Covid pandemic we had a number of computers available for remote login (remote.student.lth.se). We have now closed down this service due to cost and license reasons.

VPN

VPN is a technology that allows you to be logged in to the university's computer network no matter where in the world you are. You can thus access services on Lund University's network even though you use another network operator.

Internet connections (Lund University's website)

Connect to LTH files and folders

You can connect to your LTH home directory through the Windows Filesharing system (SMB). With this method, you can connect to and work directly in your home directory.

You can also connect to the common server folders (Share and Temp).

  1. If you do not connect from a computer at Lund University, you must create a VPN connection first! You will find the VPN instructions above. If you are connected here at Lund University (eg with Eduroam), you do not need to create a VPN connection.
  2. Open "File Explorer"
  3. Right click "This PC" / Select "Map network drive..."
  4. To connect to your home directory; In the "Folder" box, enter :
    \\stu.net.lth.se\"yourStudentID"
  5. To connect to the common folders; In the "Folder" box, enter one of the paths below:
    \\stu.net.lth.se\shared
    \\stu.net.lth.se\temp
  6. Click "Connect with a different username"
  7. In the "Username" box: enter uw\"yourStudentID"
  8. Enter your password.
  9. Click "OK"
  10. Click "Finish"

You should now see a new "letter" in Explorer for each share you have connected to.

  1. If you do not connect from a computer at Lund University, you must create a VPN connection. If you are connected via Lund University (eg with Eduroam), you do not need to create a VPN connection.
  2. Start Finder.
  3. Select "Go" and "Connect to server".
  4. Type one of the below network addresses in the Server Address field.
  5. Click "Connect".

Home folder:

  • smb://uw;"yourloginID"@stu.net.lth.se/"yourloginID"

Common folders:

  • smb://uw;"yourloginID"@stu.net.lth.se/shared
    smb://uw;"yourloginID"@stu.net.lth.se/temp

Note! Use slash "/" instead of slash "\" when connecting from a Mac!

Some students have got a separate Linux home folder, see this page: Current events.

If you have got a Linux home folder, see the following instruction to connect.

From a Windows computer:
